Baseball On My Brain

Did the BBWAA figure it out?

The Baseball Writers Association of America – those fine folks who vote for the league MVPs, ROYs, and CYs, decided the other day that if a player had a stipulation in his contract that would provide a bonus if he won the aforementioned awards, he would not be receiving any votes.

Interesting. Unfortunately, Curt Schilling should be out of the league by then. He get one million dollars if he gets so much as a third place vote.

So…are players going to have less incentive to strive for excellence now that their bonuses are taken away? Will it potentially affect the quality of the MVP?

And what does it say about the BBWAA? Is this a clean-up act? Were players buying votes? Hard to believe…but when you read Schilling’s clause, it does make you wonder.
