Posada’s deal with the Yankees

I like Posada too. While I don’t think he’s ever been a catcher of the level of Ivan Rodriguez from an all-around perspective, he’s still been darn good and has been a part of several very good teams.

But to give a 36-year-old catcher a 4-year deal doesn’t seem very wise. Plus – he was never as great of a hitter as is generally available to fill the DH spot.

This is what happens when teams become overly attached to their players and don’t look objectively at the best move for their club. The Yankees also don’t have a catcher on their 40-man roster besides Posada, and the free agent market isn’t particularly flashy. Sure you’ve got Paul Lo Duca and Jason Kendall, as well as some solid guys like Damian Miller and Yorvit Torrealba – but no one who really inspires fear and awe.

Oh well – not my money. Hip hip, Jorge!
